BHNA
History
Background:
The Beresford Hillsdale
Neighborhood Association represents a geographic area of San Mateo designated in the 1940s.
The neighborhood association was formed in the 1970s, but became passive
when local issues in San
Mateo became less
critical. It was revitalized in 1990 when threats of local overdevelopment
prompted action by residents and neighborhood associations throughout San Mateo. The Beresford
Hillsdale Neighborhood Association was very involved and instrumental in
passing “Measure H” in 1991. Measure H
limited heights and density in San Mateo and was supported by neighborhood associations across the
city.
Boundaries:
The original boundaries of BHNA extended from Highway 92 to Hillsdale Blvd, west of Alameda de las Pulgas. Since the initial designation, the boundaries
expanded to south of Hillsdale Blvd and east of Alameda to accommodate the many
residents who did not have an association representing their area, but wanted
to stay informed of local neighborhood news and belong to an organized
neighborhood association.
Status:
Today the Beresford Hillsdale Neighborhood
Association is one of the largest neighborhood associations in San Mateo, and has remained one of the most active neighborhood
associations in local and citywide issues.
